Troubleshooting a defective pod

OK, I recently traded a working 8088 pod (still have two others) for a working Z80 pod. I also (temporarily) have a 9010A added to my Fluke stuff. Now I figured (like the Z80 pod manual suggests) to troubleshoot my defective Z80 pod with the 2nd working one. The working one self-tests fine on both my 9100A and the 9010A. The defective shows problems on both the 9100A (not recognized please reset) and 9010A. Now....I am confused about the powering up of this set-up. The normal set-up seems to say to do the following when using a "normal" UUT (no pod): 1) power off troubleshooter and UUT 2) connect pod to troubleshooter 3) power on troubleshooter, do self test 4) plug in ribbon cable to UUT So...basically you have to connect the ribbon cable to the UUT while the troubleshooter and POD are powered up ? Feels kind of strange to plug it into the UUT's processor socket while it carries power ? Anyway, next I start reading page 5-12 in the Z80 pod manual and here I get confused: Under "Prepare to troubleshoot the inoperative pod as follows" it says: 3) Connect the pod under test to +5V etc. etc......so here they seem to say to DO power up the "UUT (= the defective pod)" BEFORE turning on the power of the troubleshooter. Step 4) says: Connect a troubleshooter (the 2nd one in my case, the one that will do the troubleshooting) to a 2nd (working) pod, apply power to that troubleshooter and then connect the ribbon cable to the sockpet of the defective pod.... So basically, this is the other way around of the normal set-up.....which I find strange. They further cloud things by the next text in BOLD: "Do not apply or remove any power with ribbon cable connected between second pod and inoperative pod." So this means I should have to first remove the ribbon connector from the socket of the bad pod before turning any troubleshooter off....right ? I fear I already did some switching on/off, basically as if it were to be a regular UUT. The good Z80 pod still self-tests OK so I hope I didn't damage anything. Can someone please tell me what is the right way to do this ? I did see Power failure messages at some point..... 9100A promotional video up on TTL.

I've just archived the video file from: http://tech.quarterarcade.com/Fluke9100/Fluke9100.avi (it is still there - thanks James!) On the TTL FTP site, under /Fluke/9100a/9100_Promotional_Video/Fluke9100.avi It is about 16 minutes of info on what the 9100A can do for your troubleshooting company and why you really should get one. Quite well done, and worth the watching if you have a 9100 and are wondering if you want to put time into getting it running well. I can see doing some scripts for pinball boards, and - as the probe can handle TTL, CMOS, and RS-232 levels it may even work with the Gottlieb System 1 MPU - ground reference needs to be watched though, that minus 12VDC might be a problem otherwise... The last mention on TTL about this video was in 2004 or 2005, so I thought some folks might be interested in see it. It is 75MB in size, and FireFox won't show it unless you are running something like VLC to open .avi files - FireFox defaults to Quicktime which can't handle it (AFAIK). Kurz-Kasch ROM Test II and ROM Test I

Can anyone help with some info on these two devices? Am I correct in assuming ROM Test I - a small device that connects to any Signature Analyzer to preform a full ROM signature. Was made to go along with the Signature II analyzer. ROM Test II - self contained device that displays a full ROM Signature on it's own LED display. Is this correct? Schematics would be great. 9100A motherboard revisions...

I have six of these things in the shop right now and was noticing the revision numbers on the logic boards. The first I have is Rev. C going up to Rev. G-1 - which is the interesting one as it allows for HD floppies. This revision is a small series of jumper wires and a three cuts to the group of traces just to the right of the Floppy Drive connector. The other revisions appear to only relate to parts mounted on the boards - different brands of connectors, reset switch changed, etc. as all the ICs stayed the same as far as we could tell by an eyeball examination. Making these changes does appear to enable 1.44 drives on revisions that previously only had 720 drives so I am going to write it all up - but for now you can look at the pictures of the jumpers and cuts and try it yourself...I believe you need the 40 meg version of the Bios installed as well (2 X 27512 Eproms). ftp://ttl.arcadetech.org/TTL/Test_Equipment/Fluke/9100A/Photos I will add Rev. Fluke 9100 CRC Algorithm

Samdisk looks very promising...

I just deinstalled the special drivers for Omniflop and rebooted my PC, this automatically reinstalled the default windows drivers for the floppy drive. Then installed the fdrawcmd.sys file and copied Samdisk to my C: root. Started a command box and fiddled around with some of the commands. I got this info when doing the scan command: 83 Cyls, 2 heads: 250Kbps MFM, 16 sectors, 256 bytes/'sector Then it started a list of what looks like info per track: 0.0 0 8 1 9 2 10 3 11 4 12 5 13 6 14 7 15 1.0 0 8 1 9 2 10 3 11 4 12 5 13 6 14 7 15 The first digit is the tracknr., the second the headnr. The other nrs are the sector numbers. All tracks show the same info. For tracks 80,81,82 it reports <blank> So it looks like the format is 80 tracks. Also did a "view" command and to my amazement I got to see all the bytes in hex and ASCII per sector.....I could read some info that makes sense so I guess at least Samdisk is reading the discs correctly.
