Pac repair using a chip comparitor

Hi all I was working in the shop last night on a pac that has been giving me fits. I tried the "staring at it for hours" approach first, but that did nothing to fix it :-0 Weird symptoms. With a standard set up, I was getting a screen full of slashes and zeros, flipping every now and again. I replaced the vram with one of Clay's most excellent products, and the board now went through self test over and over. up to, but not including the cross hatch. Self test showed nothing. Removing the two middle roms changed nothing as well. (that was a clue). I tried a special daughter card I have that runs MS pac with no roms on row 6. booted to currupt screen images, so I felt there was a problem in adressing the roms, or ram. Last night, on a whim, I decided to try out my new HP 10592 logic comparitor. I set it up to check 8k becuase I noticed the IRQ was not firing. The comparitor said it was fine. Since it was my first crack at using the tool, I was not convinced. Going back to the adressing issue, I decided to check the ROM selct lines, by 7N chip, 74ls42. The comparitor showed 3 bad outputs on this. Swapped it and the board came to life. Even works with the original vram, so the bad chip could have been messing with the RD signal. No sound yet, but I'll get that working :-) On the Logic comparitor. The HP is a nice little unit, but you must get one with the zif card. This was an add on produced in later runs. It allows you to configure your chip with dip switches, where the original unit shipped with cards you had to phsically alter to match the chip characteristics. Others in the comunity feel he BUGTRAP device is a better comparitor, but I have no experience with it, so if you are looking for one, you should investigate those as well. The logic comparitor will be pretty much useless on any tri-stated device. It will not make a newbie a guru, and like any test equipment, you have to understand the it's limitations to use it effectively. The Bugtrap or HP Logic Comparators work pretty well as long as you remember that it works by comparing the OUTPUTS of the IC under test. If there is a problem with an input that is external to the IC under test (ICUT) then the comparator will NOT show a fault even if the ICUT has a bad output-assuming the fault on the input causes the same output to be in the same state in the Test IC. For example if a 7404 (hex invertor) gate has a shorted to ground output, and the input is stuck high for that gate, then the comparator will show that there is no problem...(with the output)... In fact ALL a comparator shows you is that the outputs match the input logic, nothing else! Still this is VERY handy if you also use your logic probe to check that the inputs are working as they should. Z8002 tools?

Anyone know of any tools designed to emulate the Z8002 in hardware? AFAIK, there was nothing for the Fluke 9000 series, and I haven't been able to find anything stand-alone (like an ICE) either. The most I've found was a cryptic reference to a Tektronix "probe" for the Z8002 p/n 160-1465-00 EMU 1, but I suspect that was just a logic analyzer adapter. Any HP1611A Info?

I picked up a working HP1611A Logic Analyzer at a surplus store dirt cheap and am looking for any info on it, specifically the manual. The unit I picked up has the -A80 option for the 8080 uP. As near as I can tell from what little info is on the net, there are specific models for specific processors. I have no idea if the general functioning of the unit is consistent across models. If anyone has any experience with this beast, or a copy of the manual, I would be greatly appreciative of the info. I've never seen it, but I don't doubt it's hidden in the code somewhere. Probably a way to check bootleg boards for pirated code. It would definately be interesting to find out how this is activated. Wierd result while testing MS Pacman board

Anyone seen this? I had a Ms Pacman boardset (Midway) under test on the bench and at one point up popped on the screen the following (written for horizontal viewing in RED DOTS!) "MADE BY NAMCO" The three words were each almost the width of the screen and 1/3 the height, in RED DOTS!. Very curious. I was unable to figure out how this happened. Hints? Data I/O Firmware Upgrades Available

I just received a message from Memory & Logic Programming Services (the company that handles support for obsolete Data I/O products) that they have just received authorization from Data I/O to begin selling firmware upgrades for obsolete Data I/O programmers. I had contacted them a few months ago regarding this service and their position at the time was that Data I/O wouldn't allow them to sell the upgrades. Apparently, that has changed. I've requested a quote for upgrading my 121A so I'll let everyone know what the cost is. Testing Galaga...

As many of you might know, Galaga presents some interesting headaches due to it being a multi-processor board, and sometimes the 74LS367's that interface the three processors to the system address bus can have problems. How to find the problem is where this trick lies. Get yourself a Z80 NOP and plug it into the Z80 socket for each of the three Z80's - one at a time. Now you can check the buffered address bus with ease at the pull-up resistors,finding any bad connections or bad 376's very quickly. I made up a Z80 NOP a few years ago, this has a Z80 CPU with the data legs, reset, NMI, Halt legs all bent up and over the top of the CPU, then you tie the DATA lines to NOP (00 I think), and the CPU controls to high with a pull-up resistor. Make a simple Reset circuit with a diode, capacitor and resistor so the Z80-NOP will ignore the board and away you go!
