WMS system 9 sound help

This one has me baffled from a Space S*uttle and has become a BFH (Board >From Hell): The board came to me already worked on (fixed everything properly but the sound section). I used Leon's test chip and all worked except the sound. I found the 6821 in the sound section was bad and replaced it. The sound seemed happy by pressing the on-board diagnostic switch but when I sent it back to be tried, the owner reported this situation (he has a spare board that worked fine in the pin for comparison): "It doesn't play 2 sounds when you first start it up. All the other sounds seem ok, but when you get the extra ball or Special ( for the spell shuttle value) or when you get the multi-ball there is supposed to be an explosion sound. When we run the diagnostic test from the button on the coin door, the 2nd and 6th sounds (out of 7) are not there. But if you let the test run through again, the 2 missing sounds are there. These 2 sounds make the explosion sound. After you let it run till the sounds are there, then put it back in play mode it works and makes the explosion sound and plays fine. So far every time we turn the game off and start it up again the 2 sounds are missing, but running the test makes them play again." I've replaced both 6821s and 6810 ram and 6808 cpus, both eproms and checked all connections for continuity. I don't have a sys. 9 pin or test rig to test and debug the board in and the owner is not within driving distance. Any help would be appreciated. If I can't find the prob, if anyone has a system 9 machine and can finish the repair, I would send it to them and compensate them for their work (in parts or $) as I don't want to string out the owner of the board. Hello, I'm new to techtoolslist and wanted to let you know a little about me. I'm an IIT BSEE grad and worked for MMI (Monolithic Memories) as an FAE in the early 80's so I am very familiar with the early bipolar OTP PALs and have some of the original PALASM (written in Fortran believe it or not) and PALASM II software. I also worked for PMI (the inventor of the venerable OP-07 precision op-amp) and later Analog Devices (after we were acquired by ADI) as an FAE and Regional Sales Manager. I got into the arcade hobby a few years ago and have slowly worked up to repairing vid and pin boards from the 80's as I get time. I found myself repairing a bunch of pacman boards (over 300 now) through word of mouth. Now I'm finally obtaining more advanced tools beyond my trusty o'scope and multimeter - I just bought a 9010A and have a Z80 pod, 6809 pod, and probe and am in the process of learning how to use them. I am looking for a 6502 pod if anyone can keep me in mind if they see one for sale. I'll try not to be asking for too much too soon as I go along here but hope that I will be able to contribute as time goes on. I do have a wms system 9 pinball board that I need advice with and will start a thread for it. SMT Rework stations...

Anyone have an opinion (we aren't very opinionated here, eh?) or know where I might find a cheap hot air rework station? I have a couple of older PACE vacuum desoldering systems (PC1000) but nothing for them for the SMT stuff. Looking for lowish volume, but more than the Chip-Qwik process can handle. That is just too slow...and I now have a high priced tech that is nagging me to get a rework station. Franklin, I have had two System 19s with Unipaks for years, and have never been able to find so much as an operators manual for them. So, they assume the role of ballast to keep my garage from blowing away when the Santa Ana winds kick up. Some day soon, you may see mine on Ebay as well... I have one 29A with UniPack2... It does not work with Promlink ! Or I have no luck... BTW, Does anyone have the software for 29A... My one is just using a big space on my work branch... I've been tracking and bidding on some Data I/O 29B & Unipak 2B combos on E-bay but the ones that look promising (power-up and not missing the big programming socket on the 2B) are all going for above $100. Will a SYSTEM 19 or 29A & Unipak do? Would I notice the difference since 95% of my game boards are from the 80s? Do the Unipaks work on any base (without supporting the additional devices) or must they be paired correctly (29A & Unipak vs. 29B & Unipak 2B)? Any other programmers I should look out for that seem to be a consensus good choice? Thanks!
