There are multiple ways to do null modem, but it looks like the one most likely to work would be wired like this: DB9 DB25 1 - 2 2 3 3 4 6 5 7 6 20 7 5 8 4 9 - On Sat, Apr 13, 2013 at 12:07 AM, JJ <rugd2go@comcast.net> wrote:
I think the cable is the issue. I'm running a db9 on the PC end and a db25 on the fluke end. I believe I need pin 7 of the db9 to pin 5 of the db25 as well as pin 8 of the db9 to pin 4 of the db25. These are the request and clear to send and none of these ohm out. I believe these are the handshake. I will try the low baud as suggested.
Thanks

Another possible way to help your problem is to decrease the baud rate. What typically happens at high baud rates is that data transfers fine until you hit a carriage return, then all the data that was just sent has to be processed. If the sender keeps going you overrun the character buffer in the receiving device. Something as old as a 29A wouldn't handle more than 2 characters before overflowing. That's where handshaking comes in. But if you use hardware handshaking (the best choice at high speeds), the device stops the computer from sending until it's ready to go again.
But you can run without any handshaking if the baud rate is low enough.
So if you set the baud rate to something nasty slow (like 1200 or less) and the two machines then worked THAT would tell you that handshaking is the problem. At least gives a clue.

I tried the prior and all my settings look good. Anyone have the cable pin outs? I would like to ohm out the cable.
Thanks

Flow control is probably off or set wrong on computer end. Open up control panel, system, hardware, com ports. Selects your com port and port settings. Flow control should be XON/XOFF for software flow control or Hardware for hardware flow control. Use whichever matches the programmer setup.
If you're using Hardware and it doesn't work your null modem cable may be wired wrong.
Good luck.

I tried to connect to my 9010a and laptop using xp and received a buffer overrun or overflow message on the 9010. Any ideas on what the cause might be? I was using a null cable.

Has anyone gotten Fluke FIDE to work in Windows 7? I've always just used my old Win XP laptop with a USB/Serial adapter and it works great.
