Re: [Techtoolslist] Poll - Message size! Anyone still on dialup?
Don't see why not. As I just put in a separate mail, most modern mail clients will handle any size issues themselves these days... -----Original Message----- From: John Robertson Sent: 12/12/2012 21:07 To: techtoolslist@flippers.com Subject: [Techtoolslist] Poll - Message size! Anyone still on dialup? It has come to my attention that the restrictions imposed on the list from when it started in Nov of 1999 may not be valid any more...I had set the maximum message size to 40K as a number of people were on dialup and complained bitterly about the wasted bandwidth. So, UNLESS someone sends me a private email to say no, I am going to open the gate to (dare I say) 500kb which I think is sufficient for 2012 folks. This will allow a zipped disk image for example... If others want to argue for even larger emails feel free to carry the discussion on TTL. 2mb is pretty standard as the limit on a mail. Allows for some reasonable resolution images to be passed around (screen shots, schematics grabs etc). But no, no dialup here (since 1995 :) -----Original Message----- From: techtoolslist-bounces@flippers.com [mailto:techtoolslist-bounces@flippers.com] On Behalf Of Martin White Sent: Wednesday, December 12, 2012 1:25 PM To: Technical Tools Mail List Subject: Re: [Techtoolslist] Poll - Message size! Big attachments are no problem, as phone email clients leave them on the server, but tonnes of text are not good for phone bandwidth, especially if the thread gets popular, and especially if you live in an area with crappy reception. As mentioned, snipping threads is awkward on a phone and everyone forgets anyway. If the directory listing was an attachment it would have been no problem as it would be absent from all the replies. Perhaps make the limit 140 characters like Twitter :-) Game on, Phil On 13 Dec 2012 01:55, "David Shoemaker" <davids@oz.net> wrote:

Good on you John :) As a legacy from the dial up days, I still try and trim emails that I reply to, but that last message I neglected to spot. Back in those days it really was poor form not to trim a message you had quoted, similarly if you replied with a one liner, even worse! I'm placing the blame this time on the one-liner who asked the question but didn't trim! I was responding to his message, not thinking he had quoted the whole directory listing underneath :) Right now I'm on my phone (gasp!) and going below my typing area now and trimming the message is not really quick or feasible. My word, how times have changed :) Andrew Welburn (mobile) www.andys-arcade.com On 12 Dec 2012, at 21:25, Martin White <martin@guddler.co.uk> wrote:
