Hello list I just spent the last couple of evening working on modifying my 9100ft to colour VGA after years of using the fluke black and white monitor. I have documented how I have done it on my website here: https://sites.google.com/a/boomspace.co.uk/poachersropeworkshop/test-equipme... I have also documented how I replaced the SCSI hard drive with the SCSI2SD adapter. Many thanks to Martin White and Andrew Welburn for their previous work and assistance. "The following are instructions on upgrading the video card from RGB\H\V (Inverted sync) to VGA standard" 1. I don't believe you are upgrading the video card to VGA standard. That would be quite the feat plus why would you need the external conversion board? 2. You don't explain what is the purpose of the various jumpers and cuts. If it is just to negate and combine the sync, since you already have an external enclosure housing the GBS8220 which is being fed 5vdc why not just use a 7400 to handle this and not hack your video card? I'm sorry you didn't like the comments and decided to get personal. I'm also sorry if the tone of the original reply was poor. This is a fairly irreplaceable piece of kit. There is no explanation as to the purpose of any of the changes. Tony On Jan 12, 2016 3:21 PM, "Steve Larkins" <steve@ukaudiovisual.co.uk> wrote:

Tony, re-read Steve's article. He modified the original CGA card so it would drive one of the CGA to VGA converter cards so he could use a VGA monitor. John :-#(#

I did read the article. All that is necessary is to negate and combine the sync before feeding the signal into the CGA-VGA board. This can be done simply with a NAND or HEX inverter. Since the external CGA-VGA board already needs a 5v input why would you want to advocate hacking on an irreplaceable video board? It's hard to tell what is being suggested because there is no explanation as to the purpose of any of the cuts and jumpers. I'm sorry, I'm sure the original tone was poor. Send me a private email Tony why broadcast it? If you cannot understand why it is necessary you are probably the wrong audience. I mean do I really need to explain that the reason we would upgrade the video card to work on a readily available modern display rather than using an obsolete, no longer available, made out of unicorn pubes monitor? If you tried to connect up your 9100a/ft to a modern display you will find I have just saved you several days maybe weeks of effort. This is the techtool list most subscribers are very clever chaps and will not need me to explain the basics to them. I am sorry I got personal but it's been a long day and to be honest I find you very abrasive so best we leave it there. If anyone else wants to critic drop me an email. I'm sorry, I come from an open source background where technical discussion takes place openly and frankly in public. Probably too frankly in my original reply :-) I already apologized for the cranky tone.

I believe I do understand it and tried to address the technical issues in my previous post. If I'm missing something technical please correct me. Nice work Steve, I have a couple of old CGA monitors so didn't need to upgrade, but using the 9820 card allows one to use a flat VGA screen which fits much better on the bench! Older flat displays that are 4:3 are around and will work just fine with that setup. Your suggestion of adding an external CF slot is just dandy. When I get around to learning the coding for the 9100 I will track me down one of those extenders. Thanks, John :-#)# -- How to subscribe or unsubscribe from TTL http://seven.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/techtoolslist _______________________________________________ Techtoolslist mailing list Techtoolslist@flippers.com https://pairlist7.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/techtoolslist FTP site is: ftp://ttl.arcadetech.org/TTL/Test_Equipment Archive site: http://seven.pairlist.net/pipermail/techtoolslist/
Thanks John My reason for doing it was mostly desk space in my office. I wanted to be able to switch to the 9100ft when I had some down time and it works a treat. I will post up a few snippets of code that I am writing when I get a chance. I started writing a full blown taito 8080 hardware (space invaders etc) guided fault isolation program a few years back but it got put on hold. I also want to start using it to troubleshoot discrete logic pcbs starting with pong. I think the parrallel I/O modules will be perfect for that.
