So, I really need to upgrade my Z80 to Z80/AA , the regular Z80 just doesn't cut it when trying to work on Z80B @ 5Mhz ..... So, either i need to upgrade it, or try to pry a /aa or /qt from someones hands.... no, im not trading my 68X09 pod :) I may have some extra 6800 and 8086 pods. I believe you just change the cpu for a faster one inside the pod which is what I did with mine and it worked on arcade boards I was repairing, but I read if the clock speed is too fast then the UUT might not function properly in that case you need the Z80QT pod but just changing the processor turns the pod into a Z80AA Andrew Sent from my iPhone Please excuse any spelling or grammar mistakes as this was sent from my iPhone

There is a Fluke document describing how to convert to an /AA, it's on flippers ftp. It's more than just the cpu. Plus you also need the 685461 grounded cable to replace the 585141 flat.
I was repairing, but I read if the clock speed is too fast then the UUT might not function properly in that case you need the Z80QT pod but just changing the processor turns the pod into a Z80AA
I thought the AA and the QT were the same in terms of UUTs they would support, the only difference being that the QT obviously has larger eprom code size (and thus a diff board design) to support the quick tests, same as with v6 of the 68k pod. tony _______________________________________________ Techtoolslist mailing list Techtoolslist@flippers.com https://pairlist7.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/techtoolslist FTP site is: ftp://ttl.arcadetech.org/TTL/Test_Equipment Archive site: http://seven.pairlist.net/pipermail/techtoolslist/
Yes I just going to say the cable is twisted against the flat cable on the plain z80 pod, but beggars can't be choosers and where the hell are you going to get the exact twisted cable for it these days?? The easiest option is to probably use what Paul Swan came up with (https://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=305211 https://www.oshpark.com/shared_projects/4DNVi8Y0). The use of IDC type headers for the pins isn't ideal as their dimensions are much larger than what Fluke used and over repeated insertions may damage a socket. I noticed a seller on eBay was using similar to these for the underside of his AVG replacement board (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/40-600-10/A136-ND/26427). The pin dimension is pretty close to what Fluke used on their probe heads. It looks like Aries makes a more suitable post version rather than a fork (40-600-20) but availability is scant, maybe there is something with better general availability? _______________________________________________ Techtoolslist mailing list Techtoolslist@flippers.com https://pairlist7.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/techtoolslist FTP site is: ftp://ttl.arcadetech.org/TTL/Test_Equipment Archive site: http://seven.pairlist.net/pipermail/techtoolslist/
I think this option would work, you could use idc headers and solder to the avg style socket, looks like that pcb design will work with different types of CPU(s) ? Yes, the design is such that the ground pin is dip switchable but I've never looked at exactly what the compatibility is. _______________________________________________ Techtoolslist mailing list Techtoolslist@flippers.com https://pairlist7.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/techtoolslist FTP site is: ftp://ttl.arcadetech.org/TTL/Test_Equipment Archive site: http://seven.pairlist.net/pipermail/techtoolslist/
I use turn pin 40 position sockets as sacrifice sockets on my fluke pods. Could probably do the same for these. The turn pins don't tend to spring the board sockets. I use ordinary dual wipe IC sockets (Digi-Key cheapest) for my 'sacrifice' pins. The pins are slightly thinner than the average CPU leg and yet rarely give me any problem at all. John :-#)# On 2017/08/08 5:06 PM, davids@oz.net wrote:

The problem with swapping UUT CPU cables is they are simply not the same. http://flippers.com/fluke.html (near bottom is the list) What I found is that the different part numbers have to do with how the twisted pair wires are connected to the grounds. If the CPU has two grounds (commons) then BOTH lines in the cable are also tied together, and the twisted pairs for the data side of the cable is also tied to that common ground within the cable housing both at the UUT plug and the header where the ground are brought out to the pod ground tie point. This was for a 6502 cable #685479. Have not explored others, but assume similar rules apply. It looks like you can repair these cables if you are careful in trimming and crimping etc. The breaks I found were at the pod end connector and so shortening the cable by 1/2 inch should get you onto fresh wire but it will be rather fiddly work... However you can use a shorter 40 pin UUT cable that is not shielded/twisted as long as it is shorter than the regular ones for the higher speed CPUs. At least I assume you can get away with it. After all Ms Pacman (uses a Z80A) runs on a daughter board that is at least a six inch long ribbon cable... Your mileage will vary! John :-#)# On 2017/08/08 10:32 AM, William Stillwell wrote:
Actually just need to swap a few parts... but has anybody tried using the standard UUT cable?? or maybe i can take a UUT cable from one of my extra pods?
The directions are outlined in the Z80_Pod_Upgrade_To_Z80AA.pdf from Fluke.

I believe you just change the cpu for a faster one inside the pod which is what I did with mine and it worked on arcade boards I was repairing, but I read if the clock speed is too fast then the UUT might not function properly in that case you need the Z80QT pod but just changing the processor turns the pod into a Z80AA

Is there a way to upgrade a base Z80 pod or are there lots of EMI based differences between the two... Anyone in the know?

So, I really need to upgrade my Z80 to Z80/AA , the regular Z80 just doesn't cut it when trying to work on Z80B @ 5Mhz .....
So, either i need to upgrade it, or try to pry a /aa or /qt from someones hands.... no, im not trading my 68X09 pod :)
I may have some extra 6800 and 8086 pods.
