I'm in the process of building a variable (~5-15) 1.5A power supply and my parts certainly were more than $15. Granted, I just bought some from Digi-Key w/o digging around for cheaper sources but I did all this thinking I could do MUCH better, price wise, than a store bought supply. I was wrong. They usually supply +/-5V and +12V , some will also do -12V. It should be good for most of you board power requirements. Is there a way for me to make a suitable bench power supply for working on game boards? I'm not overly convinced that $300-$1,500 on a PS is absolutely necessary since the parts alone can't be more than $15 (that US money John ;)
I mean, just looking at the linear power supply boards in my games doesn't reveal complicated parts or anything that looks like it would require a high tolerance. Or am I too cheap?
