Signatures and Asteroids....
OK, you all have Signature analyzers, right? and you have a small pile of sick Asteroids, right? Do you have a working one? I think I might have found a way to check out the !@#$@# loop in Asteroids using Signatures but someone is going to have to help with the research. I'm just trying to get rid of fixing the darn things as service headaches... Results to date: Start with a working Asteroids board, put it in your bench and feed it 5VDC. Find the two self test switches, the main one to get the grid and the second one that creates a diagonal line, and turn both on (pull Low). Clock -ve Phase 2 clip Start +ve A9-1 (HALT - when Low) Stop -ve A9-1 " " Now you should get Sig 3H16 on Vcc, and 0000 on Gnd. OK? Now you will find that you get stable and different signatures on the data pins for almost all the IC's!!! I have experimented with having just the 1st self test (grid) on and checking the Sigs, if all DIP-8 switches are on then you get Vcc 1P90 and D11-9 (DAC) PAA6, and if all switches are off then you get Vcc 3958 and D11-9 17HH. Note that this does not care which version of main program you have! I forgot to check with the other version of Vector ROM so your mileage may vary, but it sure looks interesting! I shall be having my apprentice tech going through the board and get the Sigs for as many points as seem to matter beyond the basic Sigs that Peter Frey (sp?) created. Perhaps I'll post them if we have the time...but you can get rolling fast with what I've given you tonight. Anyone want to tackle the FLUKE 9010A Signature headache?? John :-#)# PS - I'm going to post this on RGVAC to troll for more techs for the group.
It will be awhile before I pull the Asteroids boards out again. I've got some issues with the Red Barron Signatures if anyone else does, let me know & we can compare notes. I thought John had someone working on the Fluke 9010A Signature software? I've got a Z80 programmer guy that would be willing to tackle it but he would like to make a few $ for his efforts. I had a couple of people looking at the code, but they are a bit too busy with real life to work on it right now. I do know that the Signature circuit in the unit is only used for the probe, the software is what develops the ROM Signatures. I confirmed this by probing the circuit while getting ROM Signatures. I can ask the folks if they can give a brief outline of what they found and report back... John :-#)# At 04:41 AM 30/08/2001, you wrote:

John, I have a guy who is sending me up some Asteroids boards for repair so at some point in the near'ish future I'll be looking at the boards (lucky me). So I can give the SA stuff a bash and let you know how i get on. I have one question though..........where or what is the second self test switch?? Ah, well actually it is on the test fixture...we have decided to go with the default test switch and all dip switches off, so we could get alpha characters as well. I have an employee right now doing the signatures and copying them to the schematic. Should be completed today, then we need to look them over and figure out which ones really matter. You need a working board to do this, but if you get a board with dead AGV then the signatures should help you fix it. This is taking HOURS!!!! ouch, if I didn't have a pile to fix I wouldn't bother, but this is going to be worth it. Now if someone would do the same for Quantum, Battlezone, and Lunar Lander I think we could all benefit. Find that HALT line for the Start/Stop and use the Phase 2 for the clock... Found a few errors in the posted Asteroids Signature Test...will correct and update it later. Wasted an hour or two tracking wrong numbers. http://www.gamearchive.com/video/manufacturer/atari/vector/signatures/ John :-#)# At 03:32 PM 30/08/2001, you wrote:
