How do I read a TI 18S42 with a Data I/O 29b/2b? I did a search through the device files and found no match. A couple unrelated questions: 1) What is the A/C (last) column in the device lists? 2) How do I tell the version number of my 2B? On everything else it's obvious. Is it the last 3 digits of the part number? So 950-0086-011 would mean I have a version 11? I would try reading it as a TI 28S42 first, use F/P code 13/09. I can't find the 18S42 in my old TI data books and it's not listed on the D I/O wall charts either. It seems to be a very obscure part. Is there a date code stamped on it? You're probably right about the 2B's revision being the last three digits. Mine is 950-0086-006. Thanks Dave! J8048A TBP18S42N I looked at the schematics (this is from Red Alert, the Character board) and they label the part "S472". I did a search in the device files and found these 2 entries. Do you think they are a closer match than the 28S42? Hmmm... 1980. The TI book I looked in was 1985. I'd guess that the 18S42 was superceeded by the 28S42, the 28S42 is a 512 X 8 PROM w/3-state outputs and according to a enhanced 'Wiretap' file found at the link below, the 18S42 is the same. I can't find any data on the 18S since my freetradezone account expired. http://wulfman.com/pdffiles/rom95f-10.pdf The National Semiconductor 54/72S472 are ALSO 512 X 8 PROMs so there's a good chance that thier pinout is the same. I don't have the data book for those handy right now. The F/P code is 08/09 for these parts. *IF* you are only reading the PROM, and not trying to program one there is a VERY good chance that either F/P code will work. The F/P codes set the pinout configuration for the programmer along with the MORE critical programming algorithms (voltage levels, slew rates, pulse widths, repetitions and more). But since you are JUST reading the device you should be OK with either. Standard static protection procedures (ground yourself before touching IC and ground target through yourself before inserting IC) should be enough. Although it never hurts to be MORE careful. The 18S42 was TI's new numbering for the 74S472 and the 28S42 was a similar part. They should all be readable using the 74S472 codes.
