Hi Guys, I'm hoping I can find some help fixing my Z-80 Pod. Here is the scoop and I will try to make this short. I purchased a Z-80 pod with the cables cut off. Found a new set of cables and tried a self test. The self test gave me the failure code 00. I then used a 40 pin socket and removed pin 29 as suggested in the manual and placed the socket on the pod pins and reinserted the 40 pin connector into the pod for a bus test. I then got a CTL ERR 00000000 00001000- LooP. As I understand it that shows an issue with driving bit 5. Am I correct that this is address and data line 5? I used my logic probe and probed the data lines of U4 or R6532AP. I found that pin 28 of U4 which is the R6532AP has Data line 5 low while the other data lines are high. Where do I go from here? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Not quite. It's saying it can't drive control bit 5, in this case the write line (pin 22 of processor). Or at least that's my interpretation. On Sat, Mar 9, 2013 at 9:09 PM, Justin Johnson <rugd2go@comcast.net> wrote:

Sounds like replacing the 6532 is in order (it's an IO chip). Those are used in all the pods I think so you could try a swap and see if that fixes the problem. -----Original Message----- From: techtoolslist-bounces@flippers.com [mailto:techtoolslist-bounces@flippers.com] On Behalf Of Justin Johnson Sent: Saturday, March 09, 2013 7:09 PM To: Techtoolslist@flippers.com Subject: [Techtoolslist] 9010 Z-80 Pod Help needed Hi Guys, I'm hoping I can find some help fixing my Z-80 Pod. I swapped the Z80 and the 6532. Here is the interesting part: When I swapped the Z80 no change but when I swapped the 6532 pin 28 of U4 was now high. I thought that was a good sign so I decided to run the self test again and it failed. I then checked Pin 28 of U4 again and it was low again. What I suspect is that when I purchased the new cables for the POD the guy shipped me a 8085 40 pin cable rather than the z-80 and pin 20 of the cable grounded. When I ohm out the 40 pin cable pin 20 is connected to the ground lug that goes to the screw on the metal standoff. The number on the 40 pin cable is 685495. Can someone verify the cable number is correct? Thanks Justin On Mar 9, 2013, at 10:50 PM, Rodger Boots wrote:

Oh, crap. 8085 pod manual ALSO calls for a 585141 ribbon cable. This appears to be the flat cable. The pod manuals don't give an alternate number for the twisted pair style cable. On Sun, Mar 10, 2013 at 4:11 PM, Rodger Boots <rlboots2@gmail.com> wrote:

When I ohm out the 40 pin cable pin 20 is connected to the ground lug that goes to the screw on the metal standoff. The number on the 40 pin cable is 685495. Can someone verify the cable number is correct?
Thanks
Justin

Hi Guys,
I'm hoping I can find some help fixing my Z-80 Pod.
Thanks

According to the Z80 pod manual (up on the TTL archives) the correct flat (not-twisted) cable (W2) is 585141 - the same as the one used for the 6502 and 6802/8. The 6800 uses UUT cable 685479. The 6809 & 8051 uses UUT (twisted) shielded cable 680595 The 8080 uses UUT cable 680603 The Z80QT uses shielded UUT cable 685461 The Z8000 uses shielded UUT cable 650432 The twisted pair UUT cables are NOT interchangeable due to various pins being tied to ground. Not sure if the flat UUT cables have shared grounded pins but I suspect so... John :-#)#

Hi Jose, Looks like the 8080 should have the 680603 UUT cable, so the 604769s cables must be for some other pod (unknown to me). If you pull them off you can see if you can identify what pins are tied together, these are the grounded pins and may guide you to figuring out which pod they are actually for... Hi Jose,
Looks like the 8080 should have the 680603 UUT cable, so the 604769s cables must be for some other pod (unknown to me). If you pull them off you can see if you can identify what pins are tied together, these are the grounded pins and may guide you to figuring out which pod they are actually for...

Thanks
Justin
According to the Z80 pod manual (up on the TTL archives) the correct flat (not-twisted) cable (W2) is 585141 - the same as the one used for the 6502 and 6802/8.
The 6800 uses UUT cable 685479. The 6809 & 8051 uses UUT (twisted) shielded cable 680595 The 8080 uses UUT cable 680603 The Z80QT uses shielded UUT cable 685461 The Z8000 uses shielded UUT cable 650432
The twisted pair UUT cables are NOT interchangeable due to various pins being tied to ground. Not sure if the flat UUT cables have shared grounded pins but I suspect so...

I just checked some of my POD's and 685495 is the twisted pair cable
for
the 8085 POD. All of my Z80's have the twisted pair cable with the number John listed for the Z80QT: 685461. Just to add one more to the mix, I happened to be working on my 8080 POD's today and can say that all of my 8080 POD's have a twisted pair cable with the number 685487.
Thanks, -Chris

Rodger is correct as far as I can tell - not having an 8080 manual on line that is. The 8088 has the 680603 UUT cable. Does anyone have a PDF of the 8080 manual they can send me to put up? Thanks, John :-#)#

Thank you John,
I opened my both 8080 pods and there is no tied together pins and apparently no grounded pins...
Mixed the boards and now I got one of them working - at least self tested OK.
I bought them from ArtFromNY about 10 years ago, maybe he has some clue on what cable is it.
Thanks,
JL

Not saying this is it, but I've had 2 instances where I would get a 00 on selftest, and it turned out to be a bad connection on the zif socket. Kevin On Sat, Mar 9, 2013 at 9:09 PM, Justin Johnson <rugd2go@comcast.net> wrote:
Hi Guys,
I'm hoping I can find some help fixing my Z-80 Pod. I then got a CTL ERR 00000000 00001000-LooP.
Thanks

Justin Could also be a problem with the 40 pin cable, try the one from the 6502 pod before going too deep into repairing this pod.
