RE: [Techtoolslist] Re: information
Hi Mark, Thanks for the response. Just 1 quick question at the moment should all the keys work from the get go or do you have to be in certain modes as I can't get the numeric part of the keyboard or the mode or signature buttons to register. Just wondering if a keyscan chip isn't working. I don't have a manual, but it's what I used when I worked for Ruffler and Deith, back in the 1980s. At the time, HP were ridiculously expensive, so Solatron tried to enter the market. The 7201 was unstable on some boards (like Galaxian). I went on a two-day course near Reading, to learn how to use it, and spent most of the time helping the designer to improve its compatability. It didn't catch on, presumably due to its size, and the fact that the HP products actually worked reliably! I'll be happy to scratch my head over any further questions, if no one comes up with a manual. An excellent piece of nostalgia - if you decide to sell it, let me know! Has anyone expanded the ASTEROIDS script (@ ftp.flippers.com) at all? I'm thinking that something to test the Vector generator would be nice to have around (I have three or so sick boards sitting around here). If anyone has a BUGTRAP IC Comparator, this toll also appears to compare PROMs. Very nice for checking soldered in PROMs (like an Asteroids C8 PROM). I wonder if it will also check RAM - never attempted that, but perhaps the next time I have a suspect RAM I'll pop the IC Comparator across it and see. Note the Comparator that I am using is the second generation version that checks up to 20 pin devices. Have a customer sending in a Death Race, I think the BUGTRAP IC Comparator and an Eprom Emulator could be used together to check in circuit PROMs that one does not have a known-to-be-good one handy! Svae desoldering a bunch of PROMs... Disclaimer: I don't work for BUGTRAP... Still on scripts...anyone created a 9010a test for 5101s? Need to write FX to every 256 bytes, then check, then do a check for odd shorted bytes....I'm not a programmer though, I'll bet there are shortcuts! One hardware alternative is to use a second 5101 (2010 would work) and make a simple socket that it can plug into an Eprom socket nearby and then use the 4 high data bits and also the same selects as the installed 5101 (soldered in way too often!). A glomper clip that hooked up to the 5101 under test would work for grabbing the power and chip selects. Then you could simply run the standard RAM checks directly. Just wasted almost two hours troubleshooting an Atari Superman MPU (pin) that turned out to have a bad 5101, but it tested OK when I just wrote and read a few bytes. The symptom was the display timing was off...the display would only show 0, 1, 2, 3, 0, 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, u, c, y, b, ?, 0, 1, 2, 3, 0, 1, 2... That was tricky. It must have been a bad bit - and who would think that Atari stored the score displays dynamically in the 5101? Obviously not I. Sigh.
